Member Spotlight: Saydar Castro

Saydar joined our fitness community in 2019, and his journey has been truly inspiring! He has been passionate about working out since 1975. Even at his heaviest weight of 675 pounds, he remained active. He began his journey by taking two lawn chairs to the park and setting them 30 feet apart. He would walk to one chair, sit and rest, then walk back to the other. Each week, he gradually increased the distance between the chairs until he could walk around the entire park without stopping. Eventually, he progressed to walking several miles, and now he can walk up to 12 miles!

Saydar shared how being overweight impacted his daily life—simple tasks like getting dressed or pushing a shopping cart became painful challenges. He wanted to engage in everyday and recreational activities, such as hiking, with more ease. The excess weight strained his knees and back, motivating him to take action and stop watching life pass by.

Diet had always been a struggle for Saydar, but about two years ago, he decided to take it seriously. While continuing to work out, he focused on portion control and healthier food choices. Although he still enjoys sweets and other treats occasionally, he now emphasizes moderation.

Since joining our community, Saydar has lost around 75 pounds and has achieved a total weight loss of 380 pounds throughout his fitness journey. He wants others to understand that anyone can lose weight—whether you're 50 or 400 pounds overweight, you absolutely can. It all starts with a mindset and the determination to make it happen. “On days you lack motivation, those are the days you need to push through. When you’re feeling low, coming to the gym can really help lift your spirits.”

What advice does he have for others? Never give up! He often recalls hearing Richard Simmons say this in his fitness videos and felt the sincerity behind it. This phrase encourages him whenever he feels discouraged or lacks motivation.

We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to learn about Saydar’s journey. He consistently shows up and puts in the effort. He exemplifies the idea that by setting goals, taking actionable steps, believing in oneself, and remaining committed, success is achievable. Don't hesitate to seek help, ask questions, and make changes! Start with small adjustments and gradually build upon them. Saydar's weight loss didn’t happen overnight; it required time, persistence, and patience. It really is a journey. You, too, can accomplish anything you set your mind to!
